you're f****ing awesome

I suspect it's the combination of spending the morning with three fabulous babies all under or around 3 mths and watching the marvelous A Child's World series but I am in awe of the amount that babies learn in those first few months.

The difference between the lovely Mattias (to use an example)and Oliver is huge. Mattias can't control his head or limbs yet and has no real grasp of anything around him whereas Oliver can sit up (mostly) and has control over his limbs (mostly) and there is a greater awareness going on.

Its actually interesting to see the progression of Sophie, Matt, Poppy and Oliver. They're all so close in age but a few months can make such a difference. At my Mothers group there's one baby who can now crawl and kind of stand up. He's only 2 1/2 moths older than Oliver. He is however and early developer.

It seems as though they reach a point where things start coming together for them. I remember the first time Oliver actually intentionally reached out and gripped something (a toy while lying on our bed), the first time he passed something from one hand to another (in the bath one day, blue turtle got passed around) the first time he rolled in his cot (I left him on his back and came back to find him on his tummy with a very confused look)He now sits on my lap and will focus on something and study it and try to eat it (my engagement ring is a big hit. Hmmmm, Sparkly)

The first time I gave him solids is very different to now. Back then it was little bits of food viewed with suspicion (what do you I have to 'chew'?) Now he gets excited by it and wants to play around with the bowl)

He will intentionally splash the water in the bath. He even copies you when you do it.

All this in such a short space of time. And it just gets better. Soon he will learn how to speak and figure out that I'm different to him and how to walk and how to lie (I didn't touch anything mummy, I just touched the cake. I didn't do it, Alex did! - watch A Child's World and you'll understand)

I can't wait!!!

Brain development is one of the things that I find absolutely fascinating.. it was great when I taught in a primary school, in one day I taught from grade 1 to grade 6... and the differences are huge.. it's just so frikking cool! I have always wanted to study it - linked in to teaching in a one-on-one situation. Teaching adults is SO vastly different to kids... it's so cool. (mind you, I hate that kids are taught in school how not to think for themselves. Thank god some of us get it back afterwards.)

Brains really don't stop developing until mid 20s I think. So cool!

According to some show i saw on ABC/SBS it was 25. until then your brain is still figuring itself out. One of the last areas to be finalised is our impulse control centre. Which explains an awful lot about our early twenties.

So who is Poppy and who does she belong to? I haven't met her.

I think Poppy = Persi, Miss Mouse

your brain is def still developing into your 20's (your body too - you can keep growing for sure - I did a bit). it's a very strong reason to not let teenagers get too drug fucked. the amount of pot being smoked so early now is going to be really evident in just a few years time when it comes to permanent damage. such a shame. it's wrong to be so blase about your children's brains...

btw Mattias grasped a rattle today, he put it to his mouth and then smacked himself in the head with it. oh the shocked look. so funny!

Poppy is the greek derivative for Persephone. So she gets Poppy from some people, Persi, Pers and Seph. I'm thinking she'll pick one and go with it... or maybe she'll call herself 'Bubbles'!

Pers reaches for toys now, but dosen't seem to know what to do with them once she's got them, so dosen't really pay them much attention. The television, on the other hand is a constant source of wonder and amazement...

I think it's really cool that there are so many babies around. I love meeting up to see what they're all up to and how different they all are. It is totally cool. It will be really interesting to see how they all interact with each other.

It's cool isn't it!
I've always like the name Poppy so it's good that it's a variant on Persephone and one that you don't seem to mind

I'm going to laugh if Poppy gets older and goes and calls herself Jane!

mmm yes, Poppy's a favourite of mine too, although so was Lily. sigh. everyone's called Lily these days... it's still pretty though!

I try to limit Matti's telly time mostly because I think he'll get sucked right into it. but he's allowed to watch the Antique Roadshow and Collectors, for the Kulture aspect. Spciks and Specks because he has to learn about music and australian humour, dammit! and Bert's Family Feud, because he's impressed and mesmerised by big heads on the telly.

and Bert's is the biggest.
